Plans

The first 4 days of the boy's life were spent like this:

C-Section

Pumping every 3 hours

Boys using shields

Also nursing

Finger feeding

Switching back and forth between formula (hospital forced us) and breast milk

Then they were in the NICU

They had NG tubes for a bit
Then we were doing some bottles
Then I was tandem feeding them in the NICU with wires everywhere
Christian on oxygen and a flow of air

Then Camden came home
And I either took him with me to tandem feed at the hospital
Or I fed him and then ran to the hospital to nurse Christian
Or we bottle fed Christian and then ran home to nurse Camden

Then they were both home
I tandem fed every 2-3 hours around the clock
And also pumped several times
Dealing with Camden's reflux and excessive puking and him being tongue tied and still using a shield

Then we got rid of the shields
Then I started nursing them separately

(Does that exhaust you after reading it? I'm the one who did it, and just reading it exhausts me all over again!)
Which bring us to where we are now, 4 1/2 months in.

I will tell you that my biggest fear with twins was the breastfeeding thing.
I will tell you I wanted to give up every day. It was the most physically and emotionally exhausting thing I have ever done. And even without all their issues, it would have been difficult.
But I pressed on, and deep down I hoped to make it to a year.

But not all things go according to plan. And in my experience, my plan is a waste of time.
The boys started formula two days ago. I continue to pump what I can and breastfeed for any "middle of the night" feedings...but I worked with my lactation consultant and pediatrician, and even still...things were drying up. I am producing enough for one baby, but not two.

I will say this.
I am extremely proud of myself.
For making it this far with all we have dealt with.
And I am thankful there is something else to feed them.
I'm so glad I stuck with it.

That said...they don't like the formula. But who can blame them!? They aren't eating as much and they are puking a ton now. Sigh. I have no clue what to do about that.

I have no idea how this is going to work into the budget, but we are praying and trusting.
Like I said, my plans are just plans and they usually don't work out.
But I can say, that I am oh so glad about that. Because I would have missed out on a lot of amazing things had my plans gone the way I ....well, planned ;)

I love my little boogers.

"My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,' says the Lord.
'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts."
Isaiah 55:8-9

  1. look into WIC for the covering the cost of formula...
and I can't imagine if my life had gone according to MY plan, thank God he's the one in control!
so proud that you went as long as you knew you could, also proud that you stopped listening to the voices telling you that you needed to make it to a year and instead listened to your heart...GOOD Mommy!

  2. You should be so proud of yourself for making it this long! You are one dedicated mommy and they are lucky to have you. They will learn to like the formula because they do not have a choice and soon this will not even be an issue! :) You can do anything!

  3. I'm really tired reading that!!! Pat yourself on the back and rest a little now! You did great! It's ok you didn't make it to a year, they will still be strong healthy boys! They got a great start!!

  4. Krystle, we used the ready made formula for our boys for the first few months because it was easier on their stomach. For some reason the powder formula can be a little more difficult for tummies to digest. IT was way more expensive using the ready made but it seemed to help them. We eventually had to make the switch back to powdered formula because I went on WIC to help us with the cost of formula and they only pay for certain brands (at least here in California they do). I'll be praying that you're little ones do better with the formula and for you! -Liz

  5. Sign up on the formula brand's website. They should start sending you coupons / checks which will help cover some of the cost. I also vaguely remember reading somewhere that there are discounts for multiples with some companies. The checks start out large and then dwindle in size but I remember that at the beginning they were quite substantial ($5-$10). I started getting some because I ended up on some mailing list when DD was about 3 so I ended up taking a bunch to the local food bank.

  6. Krystle, I have been reading and wanting to post but I kept losing them! :-( I know you may be discouraged but the reason you care so much is because you're a great mom! Maybe you have thought of this but could you rotate feedings with your boys? Nurse Christian and give the formula to Camden and then for the next feed switch. The consistent nursing can help maintain your supply, each baby is on at least a half breast milk diet and it could save money. I realize this could be more of an emotional drain however and ultimately you need to do what works for you. Most pediatric offices are very willing to help with formula samples and that can defray the cost. We also got a recipe for goat's milk formula from the Gerber Clinic that our boys responded to well (way less spitting up). It's cheaper as well even though it may see like it would be more. I am amazed at what you have persevered through! And I love the verse you shared :-) It was the theme verse for our wedding and I am learning its precepts so much in this twin baby phase about letting go of my plans and resting in God's sovereignty. Keep sharing because you can help the other
mamas of multiples that feel discouraged. You helped me! :-)
