Don’t Wait

I’m in training for something awesome and hard and good and needed (details for come) and in it the trainer talked about how important it is to not wait.

Don’t wait to tell your parents or grandparents you love them. Don’t miss an opportunity to say what you want to say. Don’t put off that time with your friends and family. Take the trip. Make the memory. You don’t know when it’s your last day here on earth.

Having stared my mortality in the face recently and having that sort of perspective thrown at me wasn’t fun but it did change how I view things. It did cause our family to say yep, we are taking that trip. We are doing that thing. We aren’t wasting a moment on things that don’t matter.

Part of that was making sure our twins got to go on their 10 Year Adventures. Inspired by Bob Goff and his book Love Does we decided years ago each of our kids would get a trip around their 10th birthday to inspire whimsy and adventure. Jack and Trevor went to Alaska the summer Jack turned 10 for an epic fishing adventure.  Covid and cancer derailed original plans for the twins but we made it work.

Camden and I went to San Diego where we stayed at a beautiful resort, walked to the beach, went to Sea World and the San Diego Zoo, spent too much money on theme park food and snacks, swam in the ocean (him not me!) relaxed by the pool and bay, ate yummy food, rode carnival rides and just had the best time.

A few weeks later Christian and Trevor went to San Fransisco where they rode a bike across the Golden Gate Bridge, watched the Warriors play, ate clam chowder on the pier, and ice cream at Ghirardelli’s, rode the trolley and drove down Lombard street and took a day trip to Monterey to see the amazing aquarium.

Memories to last a lifetime.

Don’t wait. Take the trip. Eat the food. Send the text. Make the call.
